Research

Object can roll in any direction when individual sections expand or contract. The twelve sides connect to the center, sharing the total volume of air. Roll as engineer: Synthesized cross-over from elastic system of expanding chemical-gels to elastic system of electro-pneumatic lobes. Goal of visualizing form-shifting by remote-control. Wiring installed by electrical engineering consultant. David Hamby returned to MIT to assemble and test devise.

WHO CAN CATCH THE RAIN?

The Blue Hole Lake. Santa Rosa, New Mexico, USA. A spring in the bottom of this desert sinkhole continuously fills the 83-foot deep cenote with clear blue water. Even with this high visibility, the shape and extent of the interior volume feel mysterious to locals and visitors. Creating an exhibit examined both the sub-surface geometry and the generational lore surrounding it. Roll as sculptor: Concept and grant proposal. Underwater survey, research, electrolysis, construction, display cabinet with preliminary models and images. Installation of 7-foot (2-meter) sculpture at dive center. Follow up with modeling of caverns below the floor with help of A.D.M. Exploration. Outreach project with local schools lead to a series of student-made maps.

Remote control Jell-O. A material that can take on new forms, activated by radio signal, and connected to digital models.

In the years since, various versions of programmable matter have been developed at MIT and other labs.

Model for Dr. David Cohen at Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging.

Dr. Cohen’s early work in the 1960’s continues to benefit medical advancements in imaging and brain study.

Nuclear Landmarker Concept. Ideas competition for the WIPP site, a nuclear waste storage facility near Carlsbad, New Mexico, USA. The purpose of the marker is to inform our decedents of the radioactive material beneath the ground. The site will remain unsafe for 10,000 years.
